Japanese architect Kimihiko Okada has designed the Toda House in Hiroshima, Japan.

By the architect
"The site is located in a residential area developed on a gentle perch in Hiroshima,
overlooking a far view of the Inland Sea and Miyajima.
The land of this area is developed into platforms form with several levels.
The architecture was requested to have a view over the roof of the neighboring house,
standing one level lower, and to consider security, for the site is located at the edge of the residential area, and to leave some space for extension when the client opens a small shop in the future."

"To respond to the requests, the house is lifted from the ground.
Like a bird’s nest, it called up architecture’s primary function of relief from disturbance.
The house is open to the view and yet protected from the fear and environment.
Slab and roof consists of one continuous plate.
The variations of circulation and diverse spatial relations were achieved by placing a penetrating staircase.
The extended plate made possible the future extension and softened the impression from the ground level.
Spandrel wall changes its height accordingly to the thickness of slab.
Together with the slab, the spandrel wall creates the continuous but various environments."

The Brain is a 14,280 cubic-foot cinematic laboratory where the client, a filmmaker, can work out ideas. Physically, that neighborhood birthplace of invention, the garage, provides the conceptual model. The form is essentially a cast-in-place concrete box, intended to be a strong yet neutral background that provides complete flexibility to adapt the space at will. Inserted into the box along the north wall is a steel mezzanine. All interior structures are made using raw, hot-rolled steel sheets.

« The urban plan of Palmbout Urban Landscapes asked for three blocks of

three-under-one-roof houses on the water.

The blocks are separated by waterways.
The houses are at the top of the dike and housing are one of the landmarks in the district.

The relationship with water gives a special atmosphere to the homes.

Also within this sphere as much as possible to experience, we have reduced the living room

and given additional floor height.

The living room connects directly to the terrace, which we are very close to the water are placed.

From the elevated kitchen look out over the water freely.

The floor plan is spacious and free to share.

Residents can opt for an extra bedroom or a double bathroom, a garage or shed.

Along with living on the water gives a sense of freedom.

We have individual villas given by the staggered skirting and loose caps.

The residents get more peace and privacy.

Cane collars between the terraces ensure the freedom outside.

Between the roofs you see through the air and remains on view through the landscape. »

The film unfolds and uncovers the utopia and dystopia of an unknown island

from a surreal and comical strange perspective. With unknown footage and a

gonzo abstract journalism, "Denousa" illustrates a mysterious experimental film and

shines an insight to the home island of the aspiring director, from an angle that is

quite different in realm. It is a telescopic graphic scenery trip on one of the

smallest populated islands on earth. Its wild script illuminates an instant feel at place and space,

and its raw audio and visual cascade sets a tranquil soundscape.

Through a blend of an unorthodox and non-systematic approach to storytelling,

the film personifies images in a non-linear and rather alternative language.

With a depiction of an insecure realization of the presence of time, of 'being', and the consequences of never-ending desire, the audience will be swept away to an oblivious part of a universe.

Time is still. Silence is everything.

The project seeks to create the necessary intimacy to live in the desert and to 'domesticate' it without denying or betraying its characteristics. We started by conceiving a pure solid which would appear to have always been there. During the design process, we "excavated" this theoretical solid, removing matter bit-by-bit, just as archaeologists would remove sand to discover the pre-Columbian ruins in this region. The resulting exterior spaces merge with interior spaces in a continuous fluid space within an enclosure that pushes the ambiguity between interior and exterior spaces to its limits.

PLACE

On the southern edge of garden The Black Teahouse reflects itself in water level of small dark lake. Large and exceptionally cultivated garden becomes natural part of nearby pine forest and its southern edge defined by S-shaped lake with grassy banks makes beautiful surroundings of the family house. And the Teahouse is just part of this carefully designed scenery. There is also fabulous view of the lake, which could be admired by the host and guests from the teahouse. It is a small place to gather, it is a place for a cup of tea.

TEAHOUSE

The inner space of the teahouse could be adjusted by the sliding doors, so there are more levels of perception of nearby landscape. One could enframe his own preferred view as a painting in the interior. There is a daylight play of sunbeams in gilded skylight, when the teahouse is closed. The whole interior is crowned with knitted geometry of cone soffit made out of sisal ropes. The hearth is the central point of the room, from which the space flows to large veranda built with larch planks. The veranda is a unique space for watching the water level and the life beneath. There is another important motif next to the knitted soffit in the interior, it is a rounded wall with clay plaster which integrates three bamboo vases as a reminiscence of famous japanese tokonoma – the niche for flowers and caligraphy. The Teahouse is carefully designed to become a natural part od the landscape and so the green roof is a fragment of grassy surroundings. The whole house is covered with charred larch facing and so it is called The Black Teahouse.
